The timing is of course a coincidence, but it couldn't be more ironic. When viewers watch Conan O'Brien sign off at the end of his final episode of "The Tonight Show" late tonight, it will be January 23rd, the fifth anniversary of the quiet passing of legendary host Johnny Carson.

Join us downtown this week to visit a classic Ithaca location reborn as the Prize Diner. The erstwhile Ithaca Diner closed several months ago, and the new owners spent a couple of months refurbishing before reopening in December.

After a several-year hiatus, it's nice to see a favorite old watering hole reopened where North Triphammer Road meets Route 34 and Route 34B a few miles out in Lansing. The Crossroads Bar & Grill opened its doors in mid December, a family eatery with a full bar and the beginnings of a pub menu.

I'm very grateful to have lived in Ithaca since 1967 without having a driver's license. Ithaca's diverse collection of services downtown and the fine local transportation system have made things pretty easy for me and I appreciate that a lot. Coming home from work on the Route 31, a passenger fell across the aisle, hitting his head and landing on the floor.

Imagine we have just had a natural disaster. The particular disaster doesn't matter, but here in 14850, it's likely to be a blizzard or ice storm. Trees are down everywhere, the power is out, roads are closed or impassable, and you're essentially stuck in your house or as far as you're able to walk on foot. Are you set up to supply your family with drinkable water, food, and warmth, even for just a few days?

Letter to the Editor: Sadly, the "article" by Bill Chaisson in your recent issue of 14850, about gas drilling and hydrofracking, is a snide opinion piece masquerading as information. He makes it sound as though those opposed to drilling by hydrofracturing are irrational and basing their views on ideology rather than science. This tone and the lack of balance in his discussion of fracking and its very real dangers strike me as irresponsible "journalism."
