Blackouts plague Ithaca area

Ithaca, 8 January 03 -- Despite NYSEG's attempts to work on its Ithaca power infrastructure overnight, so as not to cause outages during the day, blackouts have plagued the Ithaca area this morning and this afternoon. The power troubles are due to last week's ice storm and snow storm, which weighed down trees, causing downed power lines throughout the county. Some areas have still not been restored to full service following last week's problems.

NYSEG warned Cornell University late Tuesday that it would need to interrupt power to the central campus area on Tuesday evening. The outage was delayed until after 3:00 am, and power was restored about two hours later.

Unfortunately, unplanned blackouts have struck the downtown Ithaca and East Hill Plaza areas today. WVBR FM is currently off the air due to the power outage on Ithaca's East Hill.
