Ithaca post office won't have extended tax day hoursby Mark H. Anbinder, WVBR NewsSponsored in part by: Ithaca, 14 April 03 -- The main Ithaca post office on Warren Road will close at its usual time, 6:00 pm, on Tuesday, April 15th, rather than remaining open late with extended hours as area residents mail in their tax forms. The decision reflects both the economizing of recent years, and the fact that few postal customers took advantage of extended hours in the past. Don Stocum says "We haven't had extended hours for four or five years," and passed along the useful information that the USPS plant in Elmira, less than an hour away, will accept mail until midnight the night of the 15th. "They're already manned 24 hours a day, so there was no extra cost." Mail will be accepted at the collection boxes outside the plant, at 1580 Sullivan Street, west of Route 13 on Route 17, until midnight. Another USPS employee said "They used to stay open 'til midnight, but the last few years they did that, they really only had two or three people come in [after 6:00 pm]." "It's a regular day here," said the staffer. Ithaca's main post office, on Warren Road in the Town of Lansing, will be open from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm. The downtown Ithaca satellite post office will be open its regular hours, as well, 8:30 am until 5:00 pm. Area residents who'd like to be sure their tax returns will be postmarked by April 15th should take note of the collection times on area mailboxes, including those at local post office locations. |
