Cornell closing Hoy Road to pedestriansby Mark H. Anbinder, WVBR News.
Ithaca, 17 May 08 -- Cornell University's Hoy Road, which serves as the main entrance to campus from Route 366 or Dryden Road, will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists beginning Monday, July 21st, for about two weeks. The road was already closed from late May through September, but the University had planned to maintain pedestrian and bicycle access. Crews are using the time to repair retaining walls along the roadway, stabilize the slope along the gorge, add bicycle lanes and pedestrian crosswalks, and resurface the road. Pedestrians may use the stairs from the east end of Hoy Road up to the Schoellkopf Crescent parking lot at Kite Hill, may access the campus via Oak Avenue or Judd Falls Road, or may use the Cascadilla Creek trails and the path to the Rhodes Hall service drive. Drivers on Route 366 have to enter the Cornell campus via Judd Falls and Campus Road, or through Collegetown. Access to the parking garage is from the upper Campus Road entrance; all cars will exit the garage onto Hoy Road and will have to turn right to head to Campus Road. Pedestrian access to the garage from the Rhodes Hall area will be maintained via a walkway along Hoy Road. For the duration of the road work, Cornell's East Hill Shuttle service, carrying staff and faculty between the East Hill Office Building and central campus, will be rerouted through Collegetown on Oak Avenue, Dryden Road, and College Avenue. Cornell says Hoy Road will be reopened to allow for the arrival of new students on August 21st and 22nd, then will close again until the project is completed in September.
