Ithaca, 28 October 08 -- After a week of working alongside his predecessor, this morning Joe Mareane was sworn in as Tompkins County Administrator. He took over from retiring administrator Steve Whicher as County Clerk Aurora Valenti administered the oath of office.

As with many counties and municipalities with part-time or even unpaid elected officials, Tompkins County employs a staff administrator to oversee day-to-day county operations. Mareane will report to the elected County Legislature, and will manage the county's department heads and staff.

"I consider myself fortunate to be joining a highly respected, top-flight organization, and will devote myself to maintaining the County's tradition of efficient, effective, and responsive government," Mareane said in a press release. The public is invited to a welcome reception to be held in the new County Administrator's honor on Thursday, November 6th, from 4:30-6:30pm in the Borg-Warner Room at the Tompkins County Public Library in downtown Ithaca.
