Sheriff's investigation concludes police officer was speeding in Groton accident

March 11, 2016 by Rachel Cera

A Tompkins County Sheriff's Department investigation into a motor vehicle collision that occurred in Groton last month concluded that a police officer involved had been speeding.

The accident, which occurred on Sunday, February 28 on Route 222 in the Village of Groton, sent another driver, Ventura D. Atkinson, to the hospital. The Groton man was transported to Cayuga Medical Center by Groton Ambulance, treated for "a non life-threatening injury," and released.

According to a statement from the Sheriff's office, "the Groton Village Police patrol vehicle operated by Officer Jon P. Shingledecker was traveling at a speed that was not reasonable" when he struck Atkinson's vehicle.

The Sheriff's office says, "Officer Shingledecker was issued a ticket for Operating a Motor Vehicle Not Reasonable and Prudent for Conditions."
