A 26-year-old Ithaca man is in custody today after trying to hold up a man at a downtown ATM. Ithaca Police Department says Richard Knapp threatened the victim and a group of his friends with a knife, demanding money.

Photo provided by IPD.Knapp is alleged to have approached the man who was attempting to withdraw money from the ATM on the 200 block of West State Street, just west of the Ithaca Commons. A witness to the robbery in progress called 911 at about 1:30am on New Year's Day, and police were dispatched to the scene.
Arriving officers found the would-be robber still armed with the knife in his hand, and ordered him to drop the knife. Knapp complied, and was taken into custody without incident.
Knapp was held overnight in City lockup, the arraigned this morning in Ithaca City Court on charges of felony attempted robbery and menacing in the 2nd degree. He was remanded to Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bail bond.
