An Ithaca man is in Tompkins County Jail on Friday night after police say he shot a man on West Hill and then fled toward New York City.

According to Ithaca police, officers responded to Chestnut Hill Apartments on Ithaca's West Hill just before 6am on New Year's Day after getting a 911 call reporting that someone had been shot inside one of the apartments. The caller had hung up. Responding officers found a male victim "who had sustained gunshot wounds to his body." He was transported by Bangs Ambulance to Cayuga Medical Center, and "then airlifted to a regional trauma center in critical condition."
