IFD extinguishes dryer fire at northside laundromat

January 7, 2014

The Ithaca Fire Department put out a fire at a northside laundromat early Tuesday evening in the middle of a busy week assisting with flooding. Firefighters were on South Hill dealing with flooding from a broken pipe, and another crew, headed to pump out a basement on First Street, diverted to the fire.

Photo courtesy of IFD.IFD says two customers were in the laundromat on North Cayuga Street, near Thompson Square Park, at the time the dryer caught fire. One customer tried to put out the fire with a bucket of water before heading outside to escape the increasing smoke.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the dryer fire with a pressurized water fire extinguisher and had the situation under control in less than 20 minutes. They believe lint in the dryer's lint trap ignited, causing the fire.
