Slick roads likely this afternoon as temperatures drop and slush freezes

January 12, 2015 by Rachel Cera

The Ithaca Fire Department was busy this morning with car accidents on Ithaca's east hill, and today's weather hovering around the freezing mark means conditions are ripe for more slippery roads.

One car rolled over on Valley Road at about 8am Monday, near the Belle Sherman elementary school. Police and firefighters responded to the scene to find a car on its side and the driver outside, "shaken but uninjured."

Another accident call came in just before 10am, after a Dodge minivan skidded off the roadway and into a tree on Snyder Hill Road. The driver, who IFD spokesman Thomas T. Basher Jr. says "took a good hit" to the tree, was transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, for treatment of his injuries.

Temperatures across the area have risen just above freezing, meaning roads are mostly wet, but the National Weather Service warns that as the temperature falls this afternoon, icy road conditions are likely. Slush and water on the roads are likely to turn to ice starting at about 4pm.
