Urgent need for blood donors in Central New York and beyond after the holidays

The American Red Cross says there's an urgent need for blood and platelet donations to help prevent a shortage. Several donations are scheduled in Ithaca this month.

Blood donation opportunities in the next several days include blood drives at Cornell's Noyes Community Recreation Center on Wednesday, January 27th from 11:30am-4:30pm, Cornell's Robert Purcell Community Center on Thursday, January 28th from 10am-3pm, Cornell's Willard Straight Hall Memorial Room on Friday, January 29th from 1:30-6:30pm, and the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca on Friday, January 29th from 1-6pm.

Cornell's lacrosse teams and the Dream Factory of Central New York are co-hosting a blood drive in G10 Biotechnology Building on the Cornell campus on Thursday, February 4th from 11am-4pm, and the Newfield Fire Department is hosting a blood drive on Saturday, February 6th from 8am to noon.

Walk-in donors are welcome when there's room, but the American Red Cross is grateful when people make donation appointments in advance at www.redcrossblood.org. Anyone who's healthy, age 16 and over, and weighing 110 pounds or more, can give blood.

Throughout January, which is National Blood Donor Month, donors in Central New York will receive a $5 Dunkin' Donuts gift card. Donors always get a snack and something to drink to begin replenishing their fluids and blood sugar levels, and some blood drives have homemade goodies donated by local Girl Scouts troops, church groups, or others.
