January 15, 2014

Big Red women's hockey rides a five-game unbeaten streak into their opening home weekend of 2014, after a tie and a win at Mercyhurst this past weekend. They host Dartmouth this Friday evening and Harvard on Saturday afternoon; the Saturday contest offers free admission for kids and CFCU members, and $1 tickets for men's hockey season ticket holders.

The teams skated to a 4-4 tie on Friday night, and Cornell posted a 6-4 win the next day. The weekend left senior goaltender Lauren Slebodnick undefeated so far this season, and brought her career win total to a school-record 62 games.

Dartmouth, too, is coming off a weekend with a win and a tie, beating Yale and tying Brown in overtime to improve to a 4-12-1 record. Harvard's women are right behind the Big Red in the standings with a 12-2-2 record after a win and a loss last weekend.

For free admission to Saturday afternoon's 4pm game, CFCU members should bring a credit or debit card, a recent statement, or other proof of membership. CFCU is also hosting a slapshot contest in which a lucky attendee will have a chance to shoot the puck for a $500 prize for themselves and a matching donation for the United Way of Tompkins County. Cornell Athletics says kids 12 and under will also get in free; usually, kids 5-12 must pay a child ticket price.

Cornell's men are 8-4-3 and hit the road this weekend for games at Harvard and Dartmouth. They blanked a visiting Russian Red Stars team 6-0 in an exhibition, and were forced to cancel last Friday evening's home game against the University of Massachusetts due to poor ice conditions. The game was initially delayed until 7:30, and then 8pm, but officials were forced to cancel it. Cornell says ticket-holders for that game will receive refunds
