Friday Big Red women's hockey game vs Yale will support injured NWHL player

It's just the latest inspiring example of the way the women's hockey world comes together as a family, and we've seen a lot of those examples in the two weeks since Boston Pride skater Denna Laing was injured.

Laing is a Princeton alum, so until recently you wouldn't expect to find a lot of her fans at Lynah Rink. But she's also on the Boston Pride, in its first season with the new National Women's Hockey League, and her teammates include Cornell alums Alyssa Gagliardi and Lauren Slebodnick.

Cornell's just one of many hockey teams showing support for #14 Denna Laing. Photo courtesy of's just one of many hockey teams showing support for #14 Denna Laing. Photo courtesy of 24-year-old player from Marblehead suited up on December 31st to play the first-ever Outdoor Women's Classic at Gillette Stadium, but moments into the game, fell awkwardly into the boards and suffered a severe spinal cord injury. She's showing great spirits this week in photos and videos on Twitter as she begins to recover, but "continues to have limited movement of her arms and no feeling in her legs," according to Cornell.

Over the last few days, Laing's family has tweeted pictures and videos of her talking, smiling -- and drinking Dunkin' Donuts iced tea. They're responding to the thousands of tweets of support, including many photos (like this one from Cornell's practice earlier this week) of teams forming the number 14, Denna's number in her Princeton days, with the hashtag #14strong.

The Big Red faces Yale tonight at 7pm and Brown tomorrow at 4pm at Lynah Rink, after a close defeat on the road at Colgate on Tuesday night. The women are 7-8-2 overall, 3-5-2 in ECAC play, as they enter the season's home stretch with all-conference action from here on out. They'll be home next weekend, as well, facing north country foes Clarkson and St. Lawrence at 3pm both Friday and Saturday. Cornell's men, 11-2-2 on the year and 6-1-1 in conference play, are on the road this weekend at RPI and Union, before returning home next weekend to face Dartmouth and Harvard.

Tonight's women's game at Lynah Rink will feature a 50/50 raffle, and funds raised will go to Laing and her family to aid with medical and rehab bills. More info about Denna Laing is available at
