A pedestrian was struck and killed by a TCAT bus on Jessup Road on Monday morning as Cornell University staff were heading to work, and students were heading to classes, at around 7:30am.

Update: Cornell University has identified the victim of this morning's fatal accident as Angela Stedwell, a staff member in the College of Human Ecology's Department of Human Development.

Accident investigators from the Cayuga Heights Police Department are still on the scene, and New York State transportation specialists have been called in from Albany to assist. The accident appears to have occurred before a light snowfall began across the area. The victim was taken from the scene by Bangs Ambulance paramedics at about 10:30am.

TCAT says Routes 81 and 82 are affected by the detour. Route 82 inbound is being detoured on Cradit Farm Road to Pleasant Grove Road, and Route 81 southbound is being detoured down Pleasant Grove Road to Cradit Farm Road.

Pedestrians on Cornell's north campus, including those walking from A Lot, will also need to detour around the area of Jessup Road and the Sisson Place Extension, near the Robert Purcell Community Center parking lot and the Cornell Campus-2-Campus bus stop, until further notice.

As students returned to campus for the semester earlier this month, Cornell University Police Chief Kathy Zoner reminded pedestrians to "see and be seen" in an e-mail to the entire Cornell community. "Look up from your phone and other distractions when crossing or walking near roadways," the message said. "Be seen by motorists by wearing bright or light colored clothing, regardless of the time of day or night."

The accident took place around sunrise, just a few blocks from the corner where a TCAT bus struck and killed Michelle Evans, a Cornell junior, on a rainy evening in March 2000.

In a published statement from Cornell vice president Mary Opperman, the University said support services are available to all members of the Cornell community. Students may consult with counselors from Gannett Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) by calling 607-255-5155, or speak with a peer counselor by calling EARS at 607-255-3277. Employees may call the Faculty Staff Assistance Program at 607-255-2673. The Ithaca-based Crisisline is available at 607-272-1616. For additional resources, visit
