Info session at GIAC Thursday for upcoming IFD firefighter exam

January 28, 2015 by Rachel Cera

Interested in a career in the fire service? Ithaca Fire Department is holding an entry-level firefighter exam in March, and there's an information session tomorrow at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center for those who'd like to know more.

The deadline is February 12th to sign up for the exam, which will be held Saturday, March 28th. The test is only open to Tompkins County Residents.

The info session at GIAC, at 301 West Court Street, will begin at 5pm on Thursday, January 29th. Those interested can also contact the City of Ithaca Human Resources Department at 607-274-6539, or stop by an IFD fire station.

IFD public information officer Tom Basher says the department is looking for, "a smart, strong, diverse, team of good people to help protect our community." Basher says IFD responded to a record number of emergency calls in 2014. Of 5,164 calls to help the community, 3,615 were within the City of Ithaca, 1,506 in the Town of Ithaca, 514 calls to the Cornell University campus, and 313 to the Ithaca College campus. On average, IFD responders were on the scene in less than five minutes.
