Winter storm warning in effect Sunday and Monday for Central New York

February 7, 2015 by Rachel Cera

The National Weather Service says their confidence is growing that a "complex" and "long duration" winter storm will bring several inches of snow and the potential for icy conditions to Central New York. The storm is likely to bring 8-12 inches of snow to the Ithaca area.

Forecasters say snow mixing with freezing rain will most likely mean lower snowfall totals, and icy roads, across the Southern Tier areas such as Hornell and Elmira, and northeastern Pennsylvania, but they are unsure of where the line between all snow and that mix will be.

The storm is likely to be heaviest overnight Sunday into Monday morning, though forecasters expect it will be spread out enough that the snowfall won't be too heavy at any one time.

Meteorologist Drew Montreuil of Finger Lakes Weather warns that "The snow is going to be wet and heavy, not fluffy like the last few events." He suggests people should "be careful shoveling, and take frequent breaks."
