Did you witness this hit-and-run accident on Plain Street? Please contact IPD.

February 8, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

An Ithaca couple say their car was damaged by a hit-and-run driver late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. They're hoping the driver or a witness will come forward.

The Ithaca Police Department believes the vehicle that hit the couple's white Volkswagen was a blue passenger car with studded snow tires, judging by blue paint residue left behind and other evidence at the scene. The accident occurred in the 200 block of South Plain Street, near the intersection with West Green Street.

Car owner Alexis Zaharis says the vehicle isn't driveable in its current condition, and Mark Grimm adds that their insurance carrier won't help because they don't have collision coverage on their policy. The insurance company will only cover repairs if the culprit can be found.

Grimm says the driver who hit their vehicle may have backed into it while turning around in the driveway across the street, and may not have realized they left a damaged car behind.

IPD asks that anyone who might have seen the accident, or recognizes the described vehicle, or with other information that might aid their investigation, contact them through police dispatch at 607-272-3245, the administration line at 607-272-9973, the Crimestoppers Tipline at 607-697-0333, or the anonymous online tip form.
