Ithaca's RadioShack store not among those scheduled to be closed in company restructuring

February 9, 2015 by Rachel Cera

After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on February 5th, RadioShack Corp released a list over the weekend of 1,784 stores it plans to close by the end of March. Ithaca's store isn't on the chopping block yet.

The company, which has operated a chain of electronics stores that dates back to 1921, is closing a first round of 162 stores by February 17th, a second round of 986 stores by February 28th, and a third round of 636 stores by March 31st.

Stores that are slated to close in the coming weeks include those in nearby Johnson City, Binghamton, Vestal, Horseheads, Victor, Rochester, Cortland, and Cicero.

There have been RadioShack stores in three Ithaca-area locations over the years: in the Triphammer Mall (now the Triphammer Marketplace), in the Shops at Ithaca Mall (formerly the Pyramid Mall), and in the Gallagher Home Electronics plaza where Route 13 north and south split at the intersection of Fulton Street and Meadow Street. The sole remaining area store, at the Shops at Ithaca Mall, offers an assortment of electronics hobbyist supplies, soldering equipment and supplies, batteries, and cell phones and phone accessories.
