With extreme cold and a wind chill warning in the forecast, area school districts begin to delay or close for Friday

The temperature is dropping this afternoon from a high in the 20s, and Friday's temperature won't get much above zero in Central New York. Between the cold and forecast winds that could push wind chill values as low as 35 below zero, several schools have already decided to delay opening or close tomorrow.

Newfield Central School District and Lansing Central School District are opening on a two-hour delay. Lansing says students who ride the bus should stay inside until they see the bus coming.

Syracuse City School District and Watkins Glen Central School District have announced they'll be closed on Friday. Trumansburg Central School District is already closed Friday for a superintendent's conference day. Winter break is next week.

Homer Central School District is extending bus service to students who usually walk to school. Parents who'd like their children picked up should call the bus garage by 6:30 Friday morning at 607-749-1221.

Cornell University says they don't anticipate a change in operating status, but encourage everyone "to take adequate precautions to protect against temperatures that will not exceed single digits and wind chills predicted to reach as low as 30 degrees below zero." They suggest staying indoors during the worst of the extreme cold, and minimizing exposed flesh while outside, to protect against frostbite.
