Ithaca and several other school districts closed due to extreme wind chill

February 13, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Ithaca City School District is one of several closed Friday in the area. With temperatures hovering around zero and wind chill putting the effective temperature as low as 35 below, it's dangerous to be outside. The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning that's in effect until 4pm today, and a wind chill watch will be in effect from late Saturday through Monday morning.

Also closed on Friday:

  • Dryden Central School District
  • Watkins Glen Central School District
  • Corning - Painted Post Area School District
  • Odessa-Montour Central School District
  • Syracuse City School District

Lansing Central School District is opening on a two-hour delay. Students who ride the bus should stay inside until they see the bus coming.

Also on a two-hour delay:

  • Newfield Central School District
  • Groton Central School District
  • Newark Valley Central School District
  • Whitney Point Central School District
  • Tioga Central School District

Southern Cayuga Central School District is on a one-hour delay. Trumansburg was already planning to be closed today for a superintendent's conference day. Their winter break is next week.

Homer Central School District is extending bus service to students who usually walk to school. Call the bus garage by 6:30 Friday morning at 607-749-1221.

Cornell University says they don't anticipate a change in operating status, but encourage everyone "to take adequate precautions to protect against temperatures that will not exceed single digits and wind chills predicted to reach as low as 30 degrees below zero." They suggest staying indoors during the worst of the extreme cold, and minimizing exposed flesh while outside, to protect against frostbite.
