Winter storm on its way for Monday through Tuesday this week

February 14, 2016 by Rachel Cera

The deep freeze may be ending Monday, but Central New York and the Ithaca area are in the path of a winter storm that's likely to bring a day or two of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, the proverbial wintry mix.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton says the "complicated winter storm" will bring snow on Monday afternoon and evening, transitioning to an icy wintry mix on Monday night, and to all rain on Tuesday. "Rain could become locally heavy Tuesday," says the NWS, and the combination of frozen ground, melting snow, and rain could mean flooding. The extreme cold over the weekend means the ground is frozen solid, offering nowhere for snowmelt or rain to go.

Areas to Ithaca's north and west are more likely to get mostly heavy snow, transitioning later to a wintry mix.

The wet precipitation and temperatures dropping overnight are likely to make for icy travel late Monday night and Tuesday morning. Drive carefully!
