Water main break on south hill creates icy mess in Downtown Ithaca

February 15, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Update: City officials say Route 96B on South Hill is closed again after the same water main ruptured a second time. The City of Ithaca had to close Route 96B this morning due to a water main break at the South Hill intersection of South Aurora Street and Pleasant Street.

Water coursing down the hill is reportedly creating wet and icy conditions along Spencer Street and Clinton Street. Pedestrians walking on the south side of Downtown Ithaca should be cautious of icy sidewalks.

Ithaca Fire Department crews have spent the day pumping icy water out of the basements of some two dozen homes in the area.

City officials say South Aurora Street is closed at this time. Traffic is being detoured onto Hudson Street and Hudson Place, or Coddington Road. Prospect Street is closed from Aurora Street to Turner Street, and Turner is closed from Prospect to Columbia Street. Ithaca city officials suggest avoiding travel on South Hill and surrounding (especially downhill) streets until further notice.

The frigid temperatures and sharp winds are making travel tricky and could result in frozen water pipes in homes, as well.
