South Aurora Street closed while City of Ithaca crews clean up from water main break

February 16, 2015 by Rachel Cera

Update: South Aurora Street has reopened to traffic.

A pair of water main breaks near the intersection of South Aurora Street (Route 96B) and Pleasant Street on Sunday left an icy mess across a swath of downtown and flooded a couple dozen basements. The City of Ithaca says Aurora Street is closed on Monday morning while crews work to clean up the aftermath.

City officials say about 200,000 gallons of water spilled before the water main could be shut down on a day with record cold temperatures and extreme wind chills. Ithaca Fire Department crews helped to pump out basements of nearby houses, and plow crews worked to clear the resulting slush and ice from streets and sidewalks on South Hill and in the nearby stretch of Downtown Ithaca.

The City was forced to close South Aurora Street, Prospect Street from Aurora to Turner Street, and Turner Street up to Columbia Street.

South Aurora Street, Route 96B towards Ithaca College, will be closed on Monday until crews are done. City officials say traffic will be detoured onto Coddington Road and Hudson Street.
