Power outages, flight delays, and snowy roads on a cold Monday

February 16, 2015 by Rachel Cera

Over 800 customers are without power in the Town of Lansing, among nearly 900 New York State Electric & Gas customers without power midday Monday, according to the company. That's leaving hundreds of homes and businesses without heat on one of the coldest days of the season.

NYSEG says they hope to have electricity restored to most customers in Tompkins and Cayuga Counties by about 1pm. In addition to Lansing, customers in Groton, Genoa, and Locke are affected.

Flight delays and cancellations are piling up, as well, with some 1,300 flights canceled today and over 300 flights already canceled for Tuesday in the wake of wintry weather from New England to the southeast. So far, the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport is showing one flight delay, but travelers should check with their airlines for flight status and rebooking options.

In the meantime, despite little new snowfall, roads are slippery due to high winds carrying the weekend's light and fluffy snow across fields and onto roadways. AAA of Western and Central New York says their call centers are extremely busy answering service calls related to frigid temperatures and slick roads. Callers getting busy signals can also try calling AAA's alternate WNY number, 716-633-9860.
