Two road wins give Big Red Women's Hockey a chance to make playoffs with Senior Weekend

February 18, 2016 by Mark H. Anbinder

A pair of wins on the road last weekend, including head coach Doug Derraugh's 200th career win at the helm, leaves Cornell women's ice hockey in the running for a playoff spot. They host Dartmouth and Harvard for a pair of Senior Weekend games to close out the regular season.

The Big Red women, currently 11-12-4 on the year and 7-9-4 in league action, will make the ECAC Hockey playoffs if they finish the weekend in eighth place or higher in the league, which could happen with even a tie and a loss, depending on other teams' performance this weekend. Two wins could land them as high as sixth in the standings, but a playoff berth still depends on how other teams do.

Up first, the Dartmouth Big Green visit Lynah Rink on Friday at 7pm. Already eliminated from playoff contention, Dartmouth fell to Cornell 5-3 on their own ice in Hanover last month, despite taking an early lead. Dartmouth is 6-17-3 on the season, 6-11-3 in ECAC play.

The Crimson is 15-9-3 so far this season, 11-6-3 in league play, and topped the Red 2-0 at Bright Landry Arena in Boston last month. Harvard has been shaky recently, though, dropping games to St. Lawrence and Clarkson, falling to Boston College twice, beating Dartmouth and Princeton, and posting ties against Brown and RPI. Cornell's women last topped the Crimson two years ago in the ECAC league semifinal hosted by Clarkson.

Cornell's men have struggled the last few weeks with just three wins over twelve games since the beginning of 2016, and are on the road this weekend visiting Harvard and Dartmouth before returning home next weekend to close out the regular season against Union and RPI.
