Wintry mix this afternoon and evening for Central New York, starting with snow

March 3, 2015 by Rachel Cera

With temperatures heading up towards the freezing mark, we can expect a few inches of snow this afternoon to turn to sleet and freezing rain in Central New York this evening. This could make for icy travel conditions tonight.

Update: The National Weather Service forecast now shows snow turning to sleet or freezing rain around 5pm in the Ithaca area.

The National Weather Service is forecasting 2-4 inches of snow this afternoon for the Ithaca area, with light snow getting heavy enough to accumulate between 1 and 2pm Tuesday, and continuing until early evening. Ice accumulating overnight and gusty winds could result in localized tree damage or power outages. Icing is likely to be heavier in northeast Pennsylvania.

The Ithaca City School District has already canceled all after-school and evening activities for today. Newark Valley Central School District is dismissing early today: Middle school at 12 noon, high school at 12:15, and elementary school at 1:15. Watch the IthacaNet closings and cancellations page for updates.

Tonight's incoming and outgoing Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport flights to and from Philadelphia International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport have been canceled. Travelers should keep an eye on flight status and expect delays and cancellations due to the weather.

Drew Montreuil of Finger Lakes Weather says, "Icing amounts will not be huge, but travel will be sloppy and slippery tonight, so please be careful if you must travel." He says temperatures will continue to rise overnight, "with spotty rain showers on Wednesday."
