Parents upset at hearing about Trumansburg school lock-out hours later

March 5, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Some parents of kids in the Trumansburg Central School District say they're keeping their kids at home on Thursday, unsatisfied with the school's handling of a situation Wednesday morning. The district had instituted a "lock-out" after what they believed was a senior prank included a statement "that could be interpreted as a threat."

14850 Today has learned that a deer carcass was found in a school parking lot with a note that said, "This is just the beginning." School officials wanted to consider the situation a prank, and not a threat, but decided to institute the lock-out "as a precaution" and requested the assistance of the Trumansburg Police Department to investigate the situation.

Parents are upset that they first head about the lock-out hours after it had been initiated at about 8am. Automated phone calls and text messages alerted parents to the situation over five hours later, after 1pm. "At this point, we do not believe there is a threat and no students’ health, safety or welfare is or has been in jeopardy," a statement from the school district said on Wednesday afternoon.

Frustrated parents say the school district has not provided enough follow-up information to convince them their children will be safe at school tomorrow, and that it's not clear that officials have sufficient reason to be confident there is no remaining threat.

One parent tells us, "We don't have the luxury of keeping kids home today, but we will make our voices heard."

Trumansburg school officials did not respond to a request for comment or further details.
