Dozens of technology vendors and seminars as Ithaca College marks 25th annual Educational Technology Day

March 16, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Over 60 "national and regional vendors," including such Central New York businesses as Rosie, Seneca Data Distributors, and All-Mode Communications, as well as multinational corporations like Apple, AT&T, Epson, Scantron, and Staples, will be on hand to talk about technology with attendees of Ithaca College's Educational Technology Day. The 24th annual event, which runs from 9am-4pm this Thursday, is free and open to the public.

Ed Tech Day showcases local uses for technology in teaching and academic pursuits, with vendor booths and how-to seminars presented by faculty, students, and vendor representatives.

The event has grown to attract a couple thousand attendees a year, many from local schools and businesses small and large, with hundreds coming each year from over 120 different colleges, schools, businesses, and organizations outside the region. Dave Weil, the director of enterprise application services in Ithaca College's Information Technology Services division, has run the event since its inception over 20 years ago. "Bluetooth, VOIP, or flashdrives were hailed as 'technologies of the future' at some past Ed Tech Day," Weil says of how technology has evolved. "Now they're mainstream and we're looking for the next hot thing." He calls Ed Tech Day "the largest multi-platform, multi-vendor technology show for higher education in the upstate New York area."

Attendees may register at the door, or in advance at the Ed Tech Day web site. Anyone, not just educators, can just show up at the event. Those who register online by 5pm Monday and pick up their nametag at the event will be entered in a drawing for an Apple iPad mini.

Event organizers tout the free, regional event as a great way to meet dozens of technology specialists in a time when travel budgets are tight. "Ithaca is not as splashy as Vegas or warm as Orlando," Ithaca College officials say, but "Ed Tech Day can help stretch those limited travel funds and provide you with an opportunity to meet with major technology vendors at one time in one place."

Seminars run every hour, and include presentations by vendor representatives, higher ed teachers and administrators, and students.

Parking for Ed Tech Day attendees will be available in Ithaca College's M Lot areas adjacent to the Athletics & Events Center on the east side of campus. There's a walking path to the Campus Center, and IC will provide shuttle buses.
