Whitney Point mayoral election too close to call and heading to a recount

March 23, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

The Broome County Board of Elections has scheduled a manual recount of paper ballots in last week's mayoral election in Whitney Point, saying the race was too close to call. The Board of Elections will meet at 9am on Tuesday, March 24, at the Village of Whitney Point offices on Liberty Street for the recount.

The mayoral election for the Village of Whitney Point features a pair of candidates who both graduated from Whitney Point High School and went to college in Ithaca. Democratic candidate Ryan Reynolds attended Ithaca College, and Republican Jason Somers attended Cornell University.

Both candidates have served as members of Whitney Point's village board; Somers would remain a trustee if he's not elected Mayor.

The Broome County village southeast of Ithaca has a population under 1,000, and voter turnout for last week's election was about 160. "It was a great turnout," Somers told us. "A typical election turnout is under thirty."

The Board of Elections has until Tuesday to address the need for a recount of the election, which took place on Wednesday, March 18. Elections Commissioners John L. Perticone and Robert N. Nielsen, Jr., announced the time for Tuesday's recount on Friday. The Board has not released any preliminary counts.
