Ryan Reynolds named winner of Whitney Point mayor election after recount

March 24, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Democratic candidate Ryan Reynolds was named the winner of the Whitney Point mayoral election following a recount this morning, according to the Broome County Board of Elections. The Board had to schedule a manual recount of paper ballots in last week's mayoral election in Whitney Point, saying the race was too close to call.

The Broome County village southeast of Ithaca has a population under 1,000, and voter turnout for last week's election was about 160. "It was a great turnout," Somers told us. "A typical election turnout is under thirty."

The race featured a pair of candidates who both graduated from Whitney Point High School and went to college in Ithaca. Democrat Reynolds attended Ithaca College, and Republican Somers attended Cornell University.
