East Avenue on Cornell Campus, closed for over a year, reopening next week

Much of East Avenue, the north-south thoroughfare that runs through Cornell University's central campus, has been closed to most traffic since last January. After this week, when it's fully closed for road repair, the street will reopen next week.

The large humanities building is nestled between Goldwin Smith Hall and East Avenue, and construction will continue through the summer and fall.

Since last January, the single open lane has been restricted to use by buses, emergency vehicles, and cyclists, with automated traffic lights allowing travel in one direction at a time. University officials quickly found that, despite the signage, other drivers were using the road. After Cornell police chief Kathy Zoner said CUPD officers had "educated hundreds of motorists and ticketed numerous others for disobeying the road closure," the University installed gates in April to prevent unauthorized drivers from using the road.

Cornell says the roadway is fully closed this week to allow for pavement repair and crosswalk repainting through April 19th, and it's due to reopen to two-way traffic on Monday, April 20th. That's just in time for the celebration of Cornell's Charter Day, with a weekend of festivities April 25th-27th.
