Multiple building fire in Collegetown has Stewart Avenue closed this morning

April 14, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Stewart Avenue is closed this morning due to a structure fire in the 400 block of Stewart Avenue in Ithaca involving the Chapter House. Ithaca Fire Department has been on the scene since about 4:40am battling a fire involving multiple buildings.

The Ithaca Police Department is asking all vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians to avoid the section of Stewart Avenue between State Street and Campus Road. The roadway is closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles, according to authorities.

Mayor Svante Myrick reports that all residents are safe and accounted for. No injuries had been reported earlier today, though the Ithaca Voice reported that one resident of an involved apartment was unaccounted for earlier.

This morning, crews report significant damage to the building containing the Chapter House, which has wooden walls and decades-old wooden tables. In December, there were no injuries or damage to the building when a car careened down an icy Williams Street toward the pub. Mayor Myrick says the two buildings involved, the Chapter House and the apartment building to the north, are both total losses.

Ithaca Fire Department says several area fire departments are assisting or standing by with mutual aid.
