Sexual Assault Awareness Month brings events to Ithaca and Cornell

April 15, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and both local and campus organizations have events taking place to address this topic. This week is Sexual Assault Awareness Week, so several events are focused over the next few days.

This evening at 7pm, Cinemapolis is showing the film "The Hunting Ground," which addresses sexual assault on college campuses. The same film will be screened on Thursday, April 16th, at 5pm at Cornell's Schwartz Center Film Forum, with CUPD Chief of Police Kathy Zoner and Cornell victim advocate Nina Cummings on hand for a talk-back and panel discussion opportunity.

Also tonight, Cornell will feature local comedian Molly McDowell at the Bear's Den Pub in Willard Straight Hall, at 7:30pm. McDowell has taken to stand-up comedy as an outlet after she was raped last January.

On Friday, Cornell's Sexual Assault Awareness Week group is hosting a debate on Title IX legislation to address the question of whether universities should adjudicate sexual assault cases. The debate is in Goldwin Smith Hall's Lewis Auditorium at 5pm.

Next Friday, April 24th, the Advocacy Center of Tompkins County is planning Take Back the Night, an annual "march, rally, and vigil that unites the community to support survivors and envision an end to sexual assault, domestic violence, rape, and child sexual abuse." The event is scheduled for 7-9pm at DeWitt Park.
