IPD recovers stolen vehicle on south hill, nabs trio of teen joyriders

April 28, 2015 by Rachel Cera

The Ithaca Police Department says they recovered a vehicle that had been reported stolen. The vehicle was spotted driving on Ithaca's south hill on Monday evening with three young teenagers inside.

According to an IPD statement, police responded to the area of Clinton and Prospect Streets for a report that a stolen vehicle had been seen in the area. They soon located the vehicle "parked on the 400 block of Hillview Place," the statement says.

Sergeant Derek Necheporek of IPD's C Platoon says all three occupants found in the vehicle were juveniles: one was thirteen and the other two were fourteen years old. Two of the three were released to the custody of their parents, and the third was transported to a regional detention facility. All three are being referred to Tompkins County Family Court; the charges are grand larceny in the 4th degree, criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree, and unlawful possession of weapons by persons under sixteen.

We have asked IPD to provide further details on the weapons charge and clarify whether the individual who reported seeing the stolen vehicle was the vehicle owner. We will update this article if we hear any further details.
