It's a Mother's Day emergency with a happy ending! The Ithaca Police Department responded to an incident this morning in Ithaca's southwest when two women noticed ducklings in distress.

IPD Sergeant Deb Lawrence says the two women were watching a mother duck and her eleven ducklings on the sidewalk this morning, heading towards Route 13, when the mom hopped off the curb toward the road, and most of the ducklings, following, fell in a storm drain.

The women called 911, and when Ithaca police responded, they called in Ithaca Fire Department and Finger Lakes Wrecker Service for assistance. Crews were able to remove the grate and reunite the ten trapped ducklings with their mom.

City authorities took the opportunity to remind all local waterfowl to seek safe spots to cross the street.
