An Ithaca man is under arrest after Ithaca police say an investigation into a pair of commode crimes led the way to him. 38-year-old Gary L. Comfort was "secured in police custody without incident," after IPD investigated two larcenies last month.

Then, on April 15th, IPD officers responded to the McDonalds in Ithaca's southwest after employees discovered copper piping had been removed from several bathroom toilets at the restaurant.

In both cases, investigating officers were able to locate the copper pipe fittings, each worth about $150, at "a local steel redemption center." The Ithaca Police Department said in a statement that in each case, "the officer recovered the plumbing units, and developed the name of the suspect. The suspect was identified as Gary Comfort." An Ithaca police spokesman did not respond to a request for details on how Comfort was identified.

Comfort was released on a court appearance ticket after being charged with two counts of petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor, and one count of criminal tampering in the third degree, a class B misdemeanor.
