Flash flood watch in effect through Friday night for all of Central New York

May 15, 2014

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a flash flood watch for Tompkins County and the entire Central New York area through late Friday night. Rain beginning around midnight tonight will be heavy at times, and thunderstorms are possible.

The cold front carrying the heavy rain will move very slowly across the Finger Lakes, which could mean over two inches of rain for our area. The heavy rain is likely to result in flooding conditions in low-lying areas and flash flooding in poor drainage areas or along streams and creeks.

The affected area includes Tompkins, Steuben, Broome, Cortland, Tioga, Chenango, Delaware, Madison, Otsego, Onondaga, Oneida, and Sullivan counties in New York, and Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Pike, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties in Pennsylvania.

The Bike-to-Work Day scheduled for Friday morning in Ithaca and surrounding areas has been postponed to Monday, due to the forecast.
