Don't be alarmed if you see lots of police and fire trucks at school today

May 22, 2014

Don't be surprised if you're near Ithaca High School early this afternoon and see lots of police cars, fire trucks, or even a helicopter. There's a mock DWI accident scenario planned for 1pm to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, underage drinking, and driving while intoxicated.

The event, scheduled from 1-4pm today (the date was changed from yesterday), will feature personnel from the Ithaca Police Department, Tompkins County Sheriff's Department, Ithaca Fire Department, Bangs Ambulance, and, if weather permits, a regional trauma center's medevac helicopter unit.

Student actors and first responders will recreate a scenario of a serious motor vehicle accident, including passenger extraction, field sobriety testing, and even a mock courtroom prosecution of a driver "arrested" for DWI. Media teacher Steve Cass will have a class filming the event for a documentary.
