Mayor Svante Myrick met with family members of Amanda Bush, the young mother killed in Friday afternoon's tragic crash at Simeon's on the Commons, and with representatives of the United Way of Tompkins County on Monday morning. "The family needs our support, so we've established a fund with the help of the United Way," Mayor Myrick says.
Area residents have left flowers, wreaths, notes, and more at the site of Friday's crash, where 27-year-old Amanda Bush lost her life."100% of your donation will go to cover the cost of funeral expenses for Amanda and care of her daughter," the Mayor says. "She's a bright, beautiful, cheerful kid with a long life ahead of her," he says of Amanda's 14-month-old girl.
United Way representatives "will cover all administrative expenses for this fund, so 100% of your donation goes directly to the family." Online "crowdfunding" web sites generally take a portion of each donation to cover administrative costs and credit card fees. A campaign set up by a community member on Saturday using the GoFundMe web site had raised over $15,000 through more than 400 donations by early Monday afternoon, though about 8% of funds donated to that campaign will be taken to cover administrative costs and fees.
"Please support them in their time of need, and share widely," the Mayor asks. Donations may be made at uwtc.org.
