United Way invites Ithaca community to come together for photo to support Charleston

June 25, 2015 by Rachel Cera

The United Way of Tompkins County says "Ithaca ♥️ Charleston," and they're inviting the whole community to join together to show it, "by making a human message of love, caring and support." They're organizing an aerial photo on Friday morning at Ithaca High School.

Organizers say the intent is "a large group message to residents of Charleston, S.C, whose worlds were shattered June 17 after a deadly shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a historic black church."

The photo will be taken "at 10am sharp," by local photographer Joe Scaglione III of Photography 4d. "If the community turns out in large numbers, on less than 48 hours notice, it will be huge," Scaglione tells 14850 Today. "When I found out what was happening, I was excited to have such an important role in the event." The Ithaca native has been exploring aerial photography, and will be shooting a video and still images tomorrow.

"We'll be welcoming folks and getting them in position starting at 9:30am," says Gary Stewart, director of community relations at Cornell University, who is helping to promote the photo shoot. Free parking will be available in the high school parking lot, between North Cayuga Street and Lake Street.

United Way volunteers will be arranging community members on the grass playing field between the tennis courts and baseball field.
