Ithaca fireworks hits fundraising goal thanks to donation from Myrick re-election campaign

"Fireworks are definitely on track for Wednesday!" That's the word from Deborah Mohlenhoff, an Ithaca Common Council member and an organizer of the Ithaca Community Fireworks.

Ithaca's fireworks show is set for July 1st!Ithaca's fireworks show is set for July 1st!The fundraising got a boost over its $20,000 target thanks to a last-minute $500 donation from Mayor Svante Myrick's re-election campaign. Mayor Myrick tells us it feels like a good way to spend his campaign dollars. "Fireworks are more fun, more attractive, and reach more people than yard signs," he says. "Plus, without a declared opponent, it's nice to invest in a good cause."

The mayor says he's always loved fireworks and Independence Day. "Particularly as a kid," Mr. Myrick added, "the fact that the show was free meant my family could go along with the wealthiest family in town and we'd all have the same view. We'd all look up at the same sky together."

"What makes Ithaca's tradition special is the fact that it is funded by the community," Mayor Myrick told us this morning. "Not taxes or any one large sponsor - everyone who contributes truly owns the show." Organizers do reach out to lots of local businesses to help, but the bulk of the fundraising comes from personal donations and events like Sunday afternoon's beer tasting.

Finger Lakes Weather warns of "more showers and thunderstorms" for Wednesday. The rain may subside in time for the fireworks show to go on, as happened last year, but if not, there's a rain date of Thursday. "Our next dry day is Friday," says meteorologist Drew Montreuil. Deb Mohlenhoff says the park was soggy last year, but everyone had a good time. "We are doing everything we can to have the fireworks tomorrow," she tells us.

Another local fireworks show will be held in Lansing this week, with the Lansing Community Council hosting fireworks at Myers Park on July 3rd. Music with Steve Southworth will begin at 6pm on Friday, and free shuttles will be available from the Lansing school parking lots.
