Route 79 closed from Richford to Tompkins County line due to flooding

July 1, 2013

Update: Route 79 was reopened at 4:55pm. Several other roadways in the area, including Flat Iron Road and Harford Road in the Dryden area, Route 392 in Cortland County, and Route 11 in Cortlandville, remain closed.

With another heavy rainstorm entering the area, the National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a flash flood warning for Tompkins & Tioga Counties until 10:45pm. Avoid low-lying areas and never drive into a flooded roadway. Just a few inches of swiftly flowing water can carry vehicles away.

The New York State Department of Transportation announced at 3:32pm that New York State Route 79 had been closed due to flooding from the Richford-Lisle town line west of Whitney Point to the Tioga-Tompkins county line. Originally, the DOT estimated the roadway would be closed in both directions until at least 7pm.

Forecast rains already forced the postponement of tonight's Ithaca community fireworks show. The show has been rescheduled for Sunday, July 7th.
