Widespread power outage affects northeast homes, businesses, and traffic lights

July 5, 2012

Tompkins County says a tree falling on power lines in Cayuga Heights is responsible for a power outage that has left over 2,000 NYSEG customers without power this afternoon. Numerous neighborhoods and businesses in Cayuga Heights and surrounding areas of the Towns of Ithaca and Dryden and the Village of Lansing are without power.

NYSEG says they expect to restore power around 4pm to about 710 customers in Cayuga Heights and over 1,200 in the Town of Ithaca, as well as surrounding areas. Earlier reports from NYSEG said they believed just 137 customers were without power.

The affected area includes Cornell University's childcare center and Africana Center, and the Lab of Ornithology in Sapsucker Woods, as well as businesses around the Community Corners shopping center, and neighborhoods east of North Triphammer Road and north of Hanshaw Road.

Officials say traffic lights at the intersection of Route 13 and Warren Road are out, and we remind our readers that a non-functioning traffic light must be treated as a four-way stop. Come to a full stop before proceeding with caution.
