July 18, 2014 by Rachel Cera

First responders called in the Ithaca Fire Department rope rescue team to assist in helping an elderly man out of a south hill gorge on Thursday afternoon. The man in his 70s had fallen into a gorge behind his property on Comfort Road near Buttermilk Falls State Park and a passerby called 911.

Bangs Ambulance and Danby Fire Department rescue personnel arrived on the scene to find a man in his 70s with minor injuries attempting to walk out of the trail on his own. After evaluating the steep terrain and wet weather conditions, the first responders decided to call IFD's rope rescue team.

IFD says a rescue crew used a rope system to lower themselves to the victim, affixed him to a basket, and lifted him out to the awaiting ambulance crew. The man was evluated at the scene and did not need to be transported to the hospital, according to IFD.
