Dozens of Dunkin' Donuts franchises throughout Central New York participated in a Cops on Top fundraiser for Special Olympics earlier this month, including two in Ithaca. The one-day event netted over $42,000 for the cause.

New York State Police personnel were on hand, as well, and staffed a similar event at the Dunkin' Donuts on Meadow Street in Ithaca's West End.

Cassandra Rucker, director of development for Special Olympics of New York, says Southern Tier events raised $15,146.91, and Central Region events raised $27,517.37. In Ithaca, the Pine Tree Road location raised $889.70 and the Meadow Street location raised $982.77. Both were participating for the first time. The Norwich location of Dunkin' Donuts was the top fundraiser for this year, with $2,548.24.

Rucker says the total of $42,664.28 exceeded the goal of $42,000, and will sponsor 142 Special Olympics athletes from New York. Cops on Top is a joint effort of Dunkin' Donuts and police agencies across the state.

Special Olympics volunteers were on hand with lots of information about the athletic events featuring athletes with intellectual disabilities, and taking donations. Donations of any amount were welcome, but those donating $20 got a t-shirt and a coupon for a free cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee, and those donating $50 could pick up a pound of coffee to brew at home in addition to the t-shirt and coupon. The event on Ithaca's East Hill included several CUPD officers and personnel and a state trooper from New York State Police's Troop C barracks who has also participated in the Torch Run effort.
