Hundreds without power in Ithaca's west end and on west hill Monday night

July 27, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

Nearly 2,000 New York State Electric & Gas customers are without power on the west side of Ithaca, affecting hundreds of customers in Ithaca's west end in the City of Ithaca, on west hill in the City and Town of Ithaca, and at the southern edge of the Town of Ulysses.

The wide outage includes several blocks of Route 13 southbound on Fulton Street and northbound on Meadow Street, as well as several west end restaurants and bars. Downtown Ithaca does not appear to have been affected by the outage, though blocks as far east as Plain Street are affected.

Remember that during a power outage, an intersection with a non-functioning traffic light must be treated as an all-way stop. Stop at the intersection before proceeding in turn.

We understand that the outage is due to a tree limb falling on a power line near the intersection of Route 79, or West State Street, and Route 13A, or Floral Ave, in the west end. Drive cautiously in the area. Access to Floral Avenue and Elm Street from Route 79 may be blocked.

NYSEG is currently estimating service will be restored to the affected area, which covers an estimated 1,963 customers, by 2:45am.

Note: The original version of this story included an estimated 1,351 affeced customers, with an estimated time to restore power of 2:30am.
