Flash flooding reported in southwest and other low-lying areas of Ithaca

July 28, 2013

Steady rains overnight and this morning have resulted in flooding conditions and flash flooding in low-lying portions of Ithaca. The Ithaca Police Department says the City's southwest, including the commercial corridor along Route 13, is especially affected.

Police say they have not closed any roadways, but urge motorists to use caution while driving through lower elevations. "Vehicles commonly stall out and become stranded when driven through deep pools of water," says IPD.

The National Weather Service says Central New York can expect brief torrential rainfall rates in excess of one inch per hour this morning as a storm system moves through the area. Thunderstorms and rain showers are forecast through the afternoon.
