Route 96B on Ithaca's South Hill not ready to reopen; will open sometime in August

July 30, 2015 by Ari Kissiloff

A joint project between the City of Ithaca and New York State Electric & Gas to repair and update South Aurora Street, Route 96B on Ithaca's South Hill, was supposed to have been completed this week, but won't be finished at least until next week.

South Aurora has been closed from Prospect Street downtown to Coddington Road (by Rogan's Corner) since Monday, June 8th, and the project was scheduled to be finished "on or about" July 31, though in their original press release, the City did say "Construction, by nature, is subject to constant change, inclement weather, and unexpected findings."

Assistant Superintendent of Public Works Ray Benjamin, from the City DPW's Streets & Facilities Division, tells 14850 "City crews are working between Prospect and Hillview, our work is on schedule, and weather permitting we will pave early next week and be completed by the end of the week." The City's website still shows July 31 as the expected completion date.

The City DPW was replacing sidewalks, handicap parking, drainage, and curb work, and NYSEG crews were putting in new services.

Mr. Benjamin says NYSEG's subcontractor "encountered rock, and that can cause significant delays if they are not prepared." He says he doesn't know whether NYSEG's work schedule has changed as a result.

If weather causes further delays for DPW crews, or if NYSEG isn't ready to finish their work next week, it could slow things down as Ithaca College freshmen arrive in town and try to get to campus. IC Move-In is Sunday August 23.

The recommended detour heading south (ie: up the hill) is Coddington Road to Hudson Street to Aurora Street (reverse if heading north).
