Don't worry, there wasn't an emergency in Ithaca this morning. The Ithaca Police Department's SWAT team is just conducting a training exercise.

He tells us the SWAT team was conducting a training exercise in the 600 block of West Clinton Street, in Ithaca's West End. ("SWAT" stands for Special Weapons and Tactics, and some police departments maintain SWAT teams to respond to incidents.)

Ithaca's SWAT team was formed in 1998 after the line of duty death of Investigator Michael Padula, and is a joint jurisdictional team that comprises officers from both Ithaca Police Department and the Tompkins County Sheriff's Department. The SWAT team was awarded a $100,000 grant last year by the Department of Homeland Security's tactical team grant program.
