One more week for South Hill detour, says City of Ithaca

August 7, 2015 by Mark H. Anbinder

A repair project on South Aurora Street, originally supposed to be completed in July, will take just one more week, according to the City of Ithaca. That's the word from Assistant Superintendent of Public Works Ray Benjamin.

South Aurora Street has been closed since early June. 14850 photo.South Aurora Street has been closed since early June. 14850 photo. The joint project between the City of Ithaca and New York State Electric & Gas to repair and update South Aurora Street, Route 96B on Ithaca's South Hill, will wrap up by August 14th, Benjamin tells us.

South Aurora has been closed from Prospect Street downtown to Coddington Road (by Rogan's Corner) since Monday, June 8th, and the project was scheduled to be finished "on or about" July 31, though in their original press release, the City did say "Construction, by nature, is subject to constant change, inclement weather, and unexpected findings."

Mr. Benjamin told us this afternoon that the base course of asphalt was in and "crews are setting manhole frames to the grade," and a "final course of asphalt paving will be Monday or Tuesday." City crews will finish intersections and repair utility ditches during the remainder of the week.

Benjamin told us last week that DDS, NYSEG's subcontractor, "encountered rock, and that can cause significant delays if they are not prepared." He now says their pavement restoration will be complete by Friday the 14th. "They have been told the detour is coming down on Friday," he says.

The recommended detour heading south (ie: up the hill) is Coddington Road to Hudson Street to Aurora Street (reverse if heading north).
